Outside Learning Activities

“There is not change without a dream, just as there is no dream without hope. Life is possible without dreaming, but human existence and history do not exist without dreaming.”

This quote was the main focus of the seminar I attended about building dreams in Nicaragua through the use of popular education. I attended this seminar as my first outside learning opportunity. Popular education is not simply a bunch of games and activities. The three main focuses of popular education are to transform the notion of class, political struggle, and social transformation. All education is political, and people should work for change. This presentation really made me aware that education is not the same in every country. I appreciate the educational system here in the United States. To read more about popular education, click the popular education link!

For my second outside activity, I analyzed an article about digital citizenship. Digital citizenship is a way to teach students about internet safety and cyberbullying. The digital citizenship program provides information for students to learn about cyberbullying awareness and prevention, as well as strategies to protect themselves. This is a meaningful project because the high school students serve as mentors for middle school students. The high school students teach and exemplify proper internet etiquette  And the middle school students are given the chance to talk to older students to about situations they have experienced related to internet safety. This mutually beneficial topic makes students aware of the dangers of the Internet and gives them information to prevent getting hurt. I think that this is an awesome project to use to teach about internet safety. To read the entire article, click here: Digital Citizenship.
